Description
Summary:Oxidation of carbon by NO sub(x), with particular reference to NO sub(2) and N sub(2)O is studied. It is found that catalysts composed of ceria oxide and Pt-based catalysts are the most active. Most of the studies suggest that catalyst promotes soot oxidation indirectly by catalysing the oxidation of NO with gas phase O sub(2) to NO sub(2), which actually oxidises soot to CO sub(2). The attack of NO on carbon proceeds via NO sub(2), so that catalysts that facilitate this oxidation are effective. It is shown that the molecular orientation of nitrogen atoms in the edge regions of the carbon matrix diminish the bond energies of associated oxygen atoms. This result suggests that catalysts do not make possible to increase the oxidation rate of carbon by NO sub(2).
