Summary: | Rear-end collisions may in- volve ''whiplash injuries'' of generally less injury severity.2 Most studies reported increases in rear-end crashes after camera installation.3 With an initial driver effort to avoid apprehension for red light running causing sudden stopping and subsequent rear-end collisions, camera enforcement may change driving behaviors over time reducing both rear-end and side-impact crashes. During the timeframe of this study, no other comprehensive traffic safety pro- grams were implemented that could account for the reductions in crashes. Because intersections with high crash rates were picked for camera enforcement, bias resulting from regression to the mean or to unobserved confounders may be limitations to this study, leading to the methodological flaw of overestimating crash effects.4 Data on non- signalized intersections were not available to this study. |
