Summary: | The current status of the environmental information associated with alcohol fuels production from biomass feedstocks is surveyed. The areas of air emissions, water effluents, solid wastes, and environment, safety, and health implications are reviewed as compiled from recent publications. Atmospheric emissions from ethanol and methanol plants comprise primarily nitrogen oxides, sulfur oxides, particulates, and hydrocarbons. Sources and characteristics of aqueous and solid waste streams are also discussed. Occupational safety is examined in terms of accidents, fires, explosions, and chemical exposures. Many of these pollution problems can be eliminated by application of conventional control technologies. Additional research is needed to detail polluting streams from methanol plants.
