Summary: | Like most mammals, the mouse normally has only one fungiform taste bud per papilla. The fungiform papillae are predominately distributed on the distal, posterior surface of the tongue, although the papillae are found on the anterior surface and the proximal, posterior surface. The fungiform taste buds are innervated by the chorda tympani branch of the facial nerve. Viewing semi-thin (0.25 mu m) serial sections with the high-voltage electron microscope (HVEM) and using computer-generated, three-dimensional reconstructions has enabled the authors to examine morphological features of fungiform taste buds in an efficient manner. |
