Description
Summary:The status of the federal inertial confinement R&D program is reported, with reference to related efforts under way at the university and institutional levels. Plans are being formulated by DOE for the design and realization of a Laboratory Microfusion Facility, in which high gains will be attained by the year 2003 under optimal conditions. The AURORA is a completely integrated laser-target facility at LANL, in which the first plasma physics experiments will be performed in planar targets with all the diagnostics needed to demonstrate the advantages of the krypton fluoride laser for inertial confinement applications. Other topics covered are the DOE Heavy Ion Fusion Accelerator Research Program, ion beam research at SNL, and OMEGA laser experiments at the Univ of Rochester, NY.
