Summary: | Concentrations of amino acids in primary and secondary effluents were determined and five volatile amines in wastewater were identified and quantified. Treatment process applied at each of 3 treatment works (one treating significant quantities of brewery effluent) were identified. All wastewaters were collected prior to chlorination, acidified, filtered (Whatman GF/F) and analysed for total soluble Kjeldahl nitrogen and volatile amines by GC-ECD and GC-MS. Samples were also dried to lyophilization, reconstituted with water and analysed by HPLC with post column derivatization. Sample manipulation steps are tabulated. Detection limits and overall recoveries of 5 amines are tabulated. Concentrations of 12 nitrogen compounds found in wastewaters are tabulated including 5 volatile amines and 4 amino acids. Secondary treatment generally reduced the concentrations of amines to below the detection limit. |
