Description
Summary:•The evolutionary and swarm tools for topology optimization are proposed.•The approaches are free from limitations connected with gradient optimization methods.•The use of interpolation surface reduces the number of design variables.•The level set surface is controlled by the chromosome or the particle.•The numerical examples confirm the efficiency of proposed optimization methods. The paper deals with an application of the evolutionary algorithm (EA) and the particle swarm optimizer (PSO), to the optimization of shape, topology and material properties of spatial structures. Structures considered in this work are analyzed by the finite element method (FEM). Optimization criteria that are taken into account concern minimize mass and/or compliance. Numerical examples demonstrate that the method based on soft computing is a very effective technique for solving computer aided optimal design.
