Summary: | The use of aquatic weeds as an indirect source of human food through the cultivation of an edible mushroom
Pleurotus sajor-caju (Fr.) Singer was studied. Water spinach (
Ipomoea aquatica Forsk.) best supported mushroom growth, followed by water velvet (
Azolla pinnata R. Br.) and duckweed (
Lemna minor L.). The composition of the mushroom fruit bodies grown on all three substrates was similar. A preferential use of the polysaccharide fractions, rather than the lignin fractions was observed for all substrates. The nitrogen content of the spent substrates was enhanced, making them a better source of organic fertilizer. |
