Description
Summary:Mixed eutrophic sea water sampled at monthly intervals from the Menai Strait for 1 year was dispensed in 135 ml, 295 ml and 2290 ml Pyrex bottles for determination of primary productivity by a radiocarbon technique. Seasonal patterns of chlorophyll-a concentrations and primary productivity were generally similar for all bottle sizes but results differed significantly at the beginning of rapid phytoplankton growth in early spring when values obtained using small bottles were up to 3 times greater than those for larger bottles. These results were confirmed by determination of photosynthesis by the oxygen method. Possible causes for the effect of bottle size are discussed.
