Summary: | Rifabutin (ansamycin LM 427) is a rifamycin antibiotic with strong inhibitory activity in vitro against Mycobacterium avium-intracellulare complex (MAC) and M. tuberculosis . It is a spiropiperidyl derivative of rifamycin S. Recently rifabutin has been suggested to be useful in the treatment or prevention of AIDS, because it inhibited reverse transcriptase activity in 7-d cultures of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) in lymphocytes. The authors studied escalated dosages of this drug in patients with HIV infection, most of whom had detectable circulating HIV p24 antigen, which has been shown to decrease with therapeutic doses of zidovudine or dideoxycytidine. |
