A structure-function approach to investigate the role of inflammatory cells and mediators in the production of acute lung injury

This communication suggests one approach to study acute lung injury in an integrated, coordinated manner using a combination of human and animal studies; in vivo and in vitro approaches; and physiologic, morphologic, pharmacologic, cellular, and biochemical techniques. The authors suggest that such...

Description
Summary:This communication suggests one approach to study acute lung injury in an integrated, coordinated manner using a combination of human and animal studies; in vivo and in vitro approaches; and physiologic, morphologic, pharmacologic, cellular, and biochemical techniques. The authors suggest that such an approach will be needed to shed light on the pathophysiology of this disorder and suggest criteria that could be useful for applying these various techniques. The authors review their preliminary observations made using this approach. Lastly, they speculate on the importance of perturbations of cellular function and regulation in contributing to acute lung injury and to complications of this syndrome.
