The present paper presents some results of a study on the infraspecific variation of this species in Europe, and of a comparison of European plants with plants from the American Atlantic coast hitherto considered to be conspecific. The American plants known as D. dichotoma var. menstrualis Hoyt belong to a separate species: Dictyota menstrualis stat. nov.
