Description
Summary:The dorsal-ventral axis in the Xenopus embryo is established early in development. We are interested in the role that two major cytoplasmic movements play in determining the dorsal-ventral axis. The first of these movements is a flow of cytoplasm from the egg's interior toward the presumptive dorsal marginal zone. It occurs during the first cell cycle, and is probably related to the rotation of the vegetal yolk mass. The second cytoplasmic movement is a cleavage-associated cytoplasmic ingression in which a thick subcortical, peripheral layer of cytoplasm advances inward during furrow formation. The authors studied the details of these two movements by labelling peripheral yolk platelets with nile blue sulfate or trypan blue in normal and UV-irradiated eggs.
