Summary:Unsymmetrical phenanthroline-fused phthalocyaninato zinc monomer 2,3,9,10,16,17-hexakis(2,6-dimethyl-phenoxy)-22,25-diaza-(1,10-phenanthrolino)[5,6-c1] 1 was prepared by mixed cyclic tetramerization of two phthalonitrile precursors. Reaction of 1 with RuCl3·xH2O led to the isolation of the ruthenium coordinated phthalocyanine dimer, namely bis{2,3,9,10,16,17-hexakis(2,6-dimethyl-phenoxy)-22,25-diaza-(1,10-phenanthrolino)[5,6-c1]phthalocyaninato zinc complex} ruthenium dichloride 2. This is unambiguously evidenced by the mass and NMR spectroscopic characterization of 2 together with the fluorescence quenching of the monomer 1 after the formation of the dimer 2.
