Summary: | In November 1987, Atlantic Canada was hit by a serious outbreak of toxicity in cultured blue mussels, Mytilus edulis that led to three fatalities and adverse effects on over 150 consumers of the toxic shellfish, with 22 of them being hospitalized, 10 of whom required intensive care. This unusual episode of shellfish toxicity, that so adversely affected some consumers of cultured mussels taken from the vicinity of the Cardigan River in eastern Prince Edward Island (PEI), gave rise to some of the most intensive, cooperative, investigative work ever conducted on an environmental problem, and it had an urgency of crisis proportions. |
