Summary:An experiment involving artificial rainfall on large boxes containing simulated forest floor suggests that rainstorms can cause significant mortality in least shrews. Animals which were in underground burrows during heavy rainfall became soaked, came to the surface and died. Animals in the same containers, occupying surface nests of their own construction, survived without ill effects.
