Summary: | It was of interest to study by means of the technique of differential staining of chromosomes the nature of polymorphism in the number of autosome arms in Meriones tristrami which the authors considered as resulting from pericentric inversions. The area of Meriones tristrami covers Syria, Israel, Jordan, Turkey, west Iran and the Soviet republics of Transcaucasia. Only a small northern part of the area divided from its main massif by the Araks River is part of the territory of the Soviet Union. The chromosome set of M. tristrami from Iran and Palestine containing 72 chromosomes with one pair of biarmed sex chromosomes was first described. Five pairs and six pairs of biarmed chromosomes were found more recently in the karyotype of M. tristrami from Transcaucasia whereas M. tristrami from Israel had only four pairs of such elements. Divergence in results of different scientists was the reason for more detailed analysis of the karyotypes of this species. |
