Summary: | Zorbax ODS, Zorbax C sub(8) and LiChrosorb RP-18 columns were coated with N-decyl-L-histidine (C sub(10)-L-His) and charged with copper(II) ions. The factors controlling the retention and resolution of racemic amino acids such as column temperature, pH and ionic strength of the eluent, concentration of copper ions and content and type of organic component in the eluent were examined. The best results were obtained with a 10 super(-4) M copper(II) acetate solution in pure water. With the exception of aspartic acid, L-isomers of amino acids always eluted with smaller Kappa ' values than do the D-antipodes. The enantioselectivity ( alpha ) did not exceed 2, which is most convenient for analytical-scale separations. The possible nature of the interactions between the hydrophobic sorbent surface and the components of ternary sorption complexes is discussed. |
