Summary:Water, the Essence of Life was the theme of the International Congress on Desalination and Water Reuse which was held in Manama, Bahrain from November 29 through December 3, 1981. This conference was sponsored by the international Desalination and Environmental Association (IDEA) and the State of Bahrain's Ministry of Works, Power, and Water. The conference celebrated the 10th anniversary of the founding of IDEA. Approximately 70 papers were presented in technical sessions. The sessions were divided into the following 12 areas of interest: distillation - processes; distillation - scale control; distillation - materials and corrosion; electrodialysis; membrane fundamentals; reverse osmosis pretreatment; seawater reverse osmosis; instrumentation for desalination; new energy sources for desalination; and the role of energy and economics in water conversion.
