description Counter-current air stripping has emerged as one of the simplest and most effective technologies for reducing the level of organic contaminants in drinking-water. This paper applies air stripping theory to a broad range of organic contaminants which are of present concern to the water treatment industry. It demonstrates that Henry's constant is by far the most important parameter that affects the ease of stripping of a contaminant. Three categories of contaminants are identified; those which are not amenable to air stripping at all, those that are very easily stripped under almost any conditions; and a transitional group for which the stripping tower design must be carefully optimised for good results. Data on typical tower packings and typical contaminants are included.
