Description
Summary:Activated sludge flocs were fixed with formalin, dehydrated with ethanol, cleared and impregnated with liquid paraffin before sectioning with a microtome to a width of 3-6 um. The sections were stained with hematoxilyn eosin, Gram and periodic acid Schiff stains. There was an absence of uniformity in the structure and in the distribution of micro-organisms in the flocs and there was no characteristic size for the water gaps in the flocs. The distribution of micro-organisms and of extracellular polymers varied randomly. The similarity between the cross-sectional morphology of the floc and the rugged perimeter of the sections might be characterized within a certain size range by the concept of fractals.
