Summary: | The North American taxa grouped in the genus Alonella are highly variable, and careful comparisons are underway with European material to examine the equivalence of the taxa when the same species is thought to occur on both continents. Where once many chydorid species were believed to be cosmopolitan, recent investigations of Alonopsis (cf. Kubersky, 1977), Chydorus sphaericus (O. F. Mueller, 1785) (cf. Frey, 1980), and Eurycercus (cf. Frey, 1975, 1978; Hann, unpubl.) have demonstrated that the distribution of several species is quite circumscribed and confined to specific geographic regions. In recognition of this, it is essential to define, as far as possible, each taxon in the genus currently in the literature, enabling delimitation of closely similar taxa as they are encountered in North America. |
