Accumulation and metabolism of DDT and its metabolites by Tetrahymena

Description
Summary:Tetrahymena pyriformis was exposed to 1 ppm DDT and its metabolites for 10 days. There was an initial, rapid adsorptive phase in which the compounds were accumulated in a decreasing order of DDD, DDE, o,p-DDT, DDMU and p,p'-DDT . This was followed by a slow absorption which continued until equilibrium was reached. In T. pyriformis , DDT was metabolized to DDE, o,p'-DDT and DDMU. DDD was metabolized to DDMU but o,p'-DDT , DDE and DDMU were not metabolized. Elimination of DDT and its metabolites, after 4 days exposure to 1 ppm, was also biphasic with approximately 50 per cent being eliminated in the first 3 hours and a further 35 per cent in the following 21 hours.
