Summary:The formation of PCDDs and PCDFs in municipal solid-waste incinerators is reviewed, based on published laboratory and modeling studies. Areas discussed include: precursors and time/temperature regimes; de novo reactions; the chemical similarity of precursors, such as chlorobenzenes and chlorophenols; pathways to PCDF formation; the formation of combustion intermediates; flyash properties; and PCDD/F-formation modeling. The major shortcomings of the laboratory and modeling efforts are discussed.
