Summary: | A population of Salmo salar spawning in a river of southern Sweden and characterized by a high growth rate with some males reaching 20-30 kg after 3-4 years in the sea, was analysed for pollutants. The strongest correlation was found between concentrations of persistent pollutants and fat content. No relationships were found between fat content and age (weight, length), gender, years spent at sea or different measures of condition. The possible reasons for this are discussed. When concentrations of persistent pollutants were normalized for differing fat content, other factors had importance for potential uptake. Concentrations of some pollutants were correlated with length and there were also significant relationships for age or weight with older fish having higher concentrations of pollutants than younger ones.
