Summary: | When first describing Abrothrix illutea , Thomas (1925) noted that the presence of this species in Tucuman Province, Argentina represented a considerable northward extension of the known range of the genus. Abrothrix of Thomas (1916b) more commonly is classified as a subgenus of Akodon . Accordingly, the proper spelling of the species name illutea is illuteus . The northernmost localities of other species of the subgenus Abrothrix are in central Chile and southern Mendoza Province, Argentina. Unlike other members of the subgenus Abrothrix, Akodon illuteus inhabits the Tucumanian subtropical forest; other species of the subgenus inhabit cold forests of the southern Andes and neighboring Patagonian tablelands. |
