Summary: | Intensive exploitation of fish stocks in Lake Ladoga, Finland and Russia, during 1945-54 markedly depleted fishery resources. Catch declined from about 4000 tpy in 1945-54 to less than 2000 tpy during 1955-63. The abundance of whitefish and zander was restored by implementation of fishery controls, resulting in an increase in total annual catch to about 55000 tpy during 1964-69. Fishery controls were not sufficient to restore salmon, brown trout, and migratory fish stocks, and environmental deterioration has led to another decline in whitefish and zander stocks since 1990. Pollution reduction, ecological restoration, and intensification of artificial reproduction of valuable fish stocks are recommended to improve fishery operations. |
