Description
Summary:The vertical distribution of phytoplankton in marine habitats has been determined using 20 submersible pumps which are lowered into the water column at equidistant intervals. The samples of 11 each are concentrated by centrifugation and the numbers of motile and non-motile organisms are counted using a computer-based automatic image analysis system developed for this purpose and based on epifluorescence microscopy. Typical examples of vertical distributions are shown for the North Sea, Baltic Sea and the Mediterranean Sea. During calm weather, pronounced bands of phytoplankton were observed; with high winds and waves the organisms were distributed in the water column.
