Description
Summary:The present study has been based on the empirical experiences of 85 organic and 75 inorganic paddy growers spread over 30 villages in two districts of Punjab state viz., Patiala and Faridkot for the period 2008-09. The results revealed that the total variable cost on per acre basis for the cultivation of organic paddy was less as compared to inorganic paddy by around Rs 211. Net returns over variable cost of organic and inorganic paddy were Rs 31,516 and Rs 20,229/ acre. The investigation further highlighted that the organic crop yielded about 4.5 q/acre less paddy as compare to inorganic paddy. The study has therefore, brought out that though, organic paddy cultivation has been found more remunerative for the producers, yet the significant reduction in its yield realised have serious repercussions in term of national food security issues.
