Description
Summary:The purpose of this article is to describe the process of integrated knowledge translation (IKT) and illustrate it with two case examples of psychosocial care in community and teaching hospitals. IKT refers to an approach for conducting research in which knowledge users and investigators collaboratively engage in the entire research process, which should ultimately lead to improved patient outcomes and enhanced system functioning. The collaborative research efforts are illustrated and analyzed in this article. The process of IKT is affected by facilitating factors (for example, practitioners have the field experience that can be used to determine research questions that are highly relevant to clinical practice) and barriers (investigators may have limited knowledge of the daily operations within the practice setting and the difficulty in securing resources). IKT can have significant advantages for patients and provide an enriched work experience.
