Description
Summary:Many members of the P-450 gene superfamily have been conserved during evolution and relatively strong regional homology is observed across species at the nucleotide level. We report here the use of cloned cDNA probes corresponding to rat cytochrome P-450IVA1 (lauric acid hydroxylase) and rat P-450IIE1 (ethanol inducible) isoenzymes to detect the presence of homologous mRNA transcripts in the common mussel (Mytilus edulis ). Using nucleic acid hybridisation techniques, with conditions of low stringency to allow for interspecies differences, we found sequences homologous to P-450IVA1 in mRNA from mussel digestive gland cells. However, sequences homologous to P-450IIE1 could not be detected. The findings are in agreement with the current interpretation of the evolutionary origin of the P-450 gene superfamily.
