Elisanthe comprises six well defined species. The species have many characteristics in common, but
Silene noctiflora deviates in several important respects. It is an annual hermaphrodite which cannot be crossed with the other easily hybridizing bi- or perennial species.
The chloroplast DNA (cpDNA) of the six species was compared using restriction fragment length polymorphisms (RFLP) analysis. Excluding
S. noctiflora the variation in cpDNA fragment patterns between all
S. sect.
Elisanthe species was 2% or less.
S. noctiflora had only about 52–53% bands in common with the other five species.
It is concluded that the classification of
S. noctiflora in
Silene sect.
Elisanthe is not justified. |
