Summary:Supernatants from cultures of several laboratory strains of Escherichia coli were found to be toxic to mosquito larvae. A chloroform soluble extract of an E. coli DH5 alpha culture supernatant was fractionated by thin-layer chromatography. The mosquito larvicidal compound was characterized and found to be indole (2,3-benzopyrrole).
