Description
Summary:Between June 1993 and March 1994 surficial sediments and benthic macro-invertebrates (chironomid larvae, tubificid worms, Mytilaster lineatus and Corbicula fluminalis) were collected from 6 sites in various parts of the internationally important Anzali wetland reserve. All samples were analysed for copper, lead, manganese and zinc. Sediments were analysed for organic matter and the grain-size was measured. Heavy metal concentration varied significantly between sampling sites but not seasonally. Compared with other freshwater bodies, the heavy metal levels identified presented no danger to wetland ecological equilibrium. Copper and manganese concentrations were higher in detritivorous benthos than filter feeders but no definite trend was found for lead and zinc.
