Summary: | Ciprofloxacin has been used successfully in the treatment of patients with acute salmonellosis and for the eradication of long term gastrointestinal carriage. We describe here the emergence of ciprofloxacin resistance in Salmonella typhimurium during therapy. Of particular concern was the finding that this occurrence was associated with the development of cross resistance to other, unrelated, antibiotics, producing an organism which had a reduced susceptibility to all the drugs commonly used for the treatment of invasive salmonella infections. |
