Summary: | Five-year old carp spawners were held for 4 years in 8 carp ponds, of which 4 were made highly eutrophic by the addition of urea and superphosphate, and fish condition and reproductive ability were measured. Fish survival in eutrophic ponds (63 per cent) was significantly lower than in control ponds (87 per cent). There was no significant difference in gonadosomatic index (GSI) for males between the types of pond but the GSI for females in the eutrophic ponds was significantly lower than in control ponds. Fish from the eutrophic ponds had significantly lower sperm volume in males and lower fecundity than those from the control ponds. In vitro hatching was significantly higher in control solutions than in nitrate solutions (greater than 15 mg per litre) or nitrite solutions (greater than 1 mg per litre). |
