Crustacean zooplankton species richness and associations in reservoirs and ponds of Aguascalientes State, Mexico
Zooplankton were sampled from 19 ponds and lakes on at least 2 dates over the period 1980-1993. The 5 reservoirs were permanent impoundments though one was drawn down annually to dryness. The ponds included both artificial and natural bodies of water. The zooplankton taxa observed comprised 33 clado...

Summary: | Zooplankton were sampled from 19 ponds and lakes on at least 2 dates over the period 1980-1993. The 5 reservoirs were permanent impoundments though one was drawn down annually to dryness. The ponds included both artificial and natural bodies of water. The zooplankton taxa observed comprised 33 cladoceran, 16 copepods, 2 anostracans, 1 notostracan and an amphipod. A significant correlation was found between lake size and species richness. This relationship was very similar to that found in more northerly lakes. The 2 principal assemblages found were small species that occurred with fish and the large Daphnia schodleri which occurred with the invertebrate predator Notonecta in the absence of fish. These associations were similar to those which occurred throughout temperate north America. There are 68 references. |
