The influence of suspended silt on oxygen consumption by the redbreast tilapia, Tilapia rendalli (Boulenger, 1896)

Description
Summary:Adult redbreast tilapia (Tilapia rendalli), exposed to 10, 20 and 40 g per litre of silt from the Phalaborwa barrage under controlled laboratory conditions showed increased oxygen consumption rates (53-77 per cent from initial). The highest oxygen consumption values were usually recorded after the first 5-10 minutes at each concentration indicating increased metabolic rates of the fish probably due to stress from the introduction of silt. The 40 g silt per litre concentration gave the highest overall consumption values. Although these results indicate that sublethal releases from the Phalaborwa barrage stress the resident fish population the extent of impact depends on frequency, duration and severity of exposure and the species involved.
