Accumulation and depuration of DDTs in the food chain from Artemia to brook trout (Salvelinus fontinalis)
Artemia nauplii were exposed to 0.5 or 1 ng organochlorine mixtures (p,p'-DDE, p,p'-DDD, o,p-DDT, p,p'-DDT) per ml for 24 h. Uncontaminated or contaminated nauplii (1 g per d) were transferred to fibreglass tanks containing brook trout (Salvelinus fontinalis) for 24 d. From day 24 to...

Summary: | Artemia nauplii were exposed to 0.5 or 1 ng organochlorine mixtures (p,p'-DDE, p,p'-DDD, o,p-DDT, p,p'-DDT) per ml for 24 h. Uncontaminated or contaminated nauplii (1 g per d) were transferred to fibreglass tanks containing brook trout (Salvelinus fontinalis) for 24 d. From day 24 to day 48, all fish were fed 2.5 g of uncontaminated Artemia nauplii every 2 d. Samples of fish and nauplii were analysed for organochlorines using gas chromatography with electron capture detection. After 24 h exposure, p,p'-DDT levels in the nauplii were 116.46 and 247.94 ng per g in the 0.5 and 1 ng per ml treatment groups. Concentrations of p,p'-DDE were 24.10 and 41.42 ng per g in the 0.5 and 1 ng per ml treatment groups. The different levels of the different organochlorines in Artemia were due to different liposolubility and selectivity. Fish fed with the 1 mg per ml contaminated Artemia had a significantly higher accumulation rate than fish fed nauplii pre-treated with 0.5 ng per ml organochlorines. Concentrations of p,p'-DDD, o,p-DDT and p,p'-DDT in the fish fed the 2 levels of contaminated Artemia were of the same order of magnitude between day 0 and day 24. Brook trout fed Artemia diets containing the lowest amounts of p,p'-DDE had the highest p,p'-DDE concentrations. This suggested that mixed-function oxidaze may have been induced for the dechlorination of p,p'-DDT to p,p'-DDE. |
