Summary: | Ectomycorrhizal Scots pine seedlings were grown in ambient or double atmospheric carbon dioxide environments under summer conditions and after an artificial autumn period, and the effect of CO sub(2) enrichment on the ectomycorrhizal fungi and soil fauna was studied. Results showed that neither the plant nor the fungal biomass was affected significantly by the CO sub(2) treatment, but there was a tendency for an increase in the summer harvest in the double-CO sub(2) seedlings. Visible symptoms of nutrient deficiency were observed in the double-CO sub(2) seedlings during the two months of winter acclimation, and the nitrogen concentration in the previous-year needles was lower. However, the current-year needles showed no difference between the treatments. The only soil animal group affected by the double-CO sub(2) treatment was the enchytraeids, which were doubled in number. |
