Replicative conidiospore formation and discharge by Erynia conica and Erynia curvispora (Zygomycetes: Entomophthorales)
The fungi Erynia conica (Nowakowski) Remaudiere and Hennebert and Erynia curvispora (Nowakowski) Nowakowski (Entomophthorales) reduce black fly (Simuliidae) populations by limiting egg production and/or by killing the adults. Summary: | The fungi Erynia conica (Nowakowski) Remaudiere and Hennebert and Erynia curvispora (Nowakowski) Nowakowski (Entomophthorales) reduce black fly (Simuliidae) populations by limiting egg production and/or by killing the adults. This study examines periodicity of type 2 conidial production by E. conica and E. curvispora as a part of an infection study. Erynia conica and E. curvispora were isolated from Simulium verecundum complex and S. decorum. respectively. The data from the light and dark regimes for type 2 secondary formation suggest the importance of the photoperiod in the pattern of sporulation. The present results suggest diurnal periodicity in type 2 conidiogenesis by both fungal species in darkness, and that for E. conica, light eliminated the bimodal cycle even as type 2 secondary conidia formation remained high. |
