Summary:Investigation on tumour induction in experimental animals can provide information on the nature of dose-effect relationships, relevant for the extrapolation to the area of low doses. Such experiments have been performed at a limited number of institutes throughout the world, however, mutually different approaches were followed for the data analysis. In some cases the terminology, such as incidence or prevalence, is not fully detailed. Mammary carcinogenesis data in the rat have been analyzed with parametric Weibull analysis, optimized via the maximum likelihood or chi-square method, as well as with the nonparametric proportional hazards model.
