Description
Summary:Key microbial parameters impacted by heavy metals in sewage sludges applied as soil amendments were studied to highlight the importance of such parameters in addition to soil geochemical parameters. Dehydrogenase enzyme activity was measured in field experiments, as was the presence and number of effective nitrogen fixing cells of Rhizobium leguminosarum biovar trifolii capable of nodulating the host plant, white clover. Findings were assessed with respect to maximum permissible concentrations of heavy metals in sludge amended soils, as found in UK limit values and EEC directives. In some cases, particularly for measurements of symbiotic dinitrogen fixation, effects were evident at metal concentrations below statutory limits for toxic elements.
