Summary: | Since catalytic converters were introduced in Germany in the 1980s for automotive pollution control, concern has developed regarding increased concentrations of platinum metals (platinum, lead, and cerium-Pt, Pb, and Ce, respectively) in roadside soils. Road dust samples were collected along roadways in Frankfurt am Main, Germany, and analyzed for these metals and other substances. Street particulate dust contains quartz, clay, soot, and organic substance. Average Pt and Pb levels in samples were highest along the Autobahn, and decreased in this order: inner city streets, indoor car parks, and tunnels. Ce had a different pattern, with the highest amounts occurring in the inner city. Road dust Pt concentrations were positively associated with traffic density and speed, although high levels in indoor car parks indicate that Pt emissions also are significant at low speeds. Sample collection height affected concentrations found, with peaks occurring below 1.5 m. |
