Summary: | The A sub(2)N two-sludge system for wastewater treatment utilizes denitrifying phosphorus-removing bacteria for nitrogen and P removal, with an anaerobic phase placed at the influent side followed by anoxic and external nitrification phases. Results are presented from a study in which the denitrifying P-removal capacity of the system was investigated with continuous flow. To determine optimal conditions, the influent COD/total N ratio, sludge retention time, bypass sludge flow rate, and return sludge flow rate were studied. Complete nitrification was achieved, and despite variable influent COD concentrations, the average COD removal efficiency was approximately 93%. Removal increased with increasing influent COD/total N ratio up to a specific value. The optimal sludge retention time was 14 d, and the bypass sludge flow rate was controlled around 26 33% of the influent flow rate. |
