Description
Summary:Empirical data on trophic interactions between the aphid predator Metasyrphus corollae, the aphid parasite Diaeretiella rapae and the aphids Brevicoryne brassicae and Myzus persicae were collected. A skewed curve seemed to express the development of parasitism in the absence of the predator. An increase in the percentage of parasitized aphids of both species occurred at the time of intense feeding by the predator released into the system. A simple mathematical model for this situation was developed. The simulation of interactions between aphids and the parasite corresponded well to the empirically obtained curve. Application of the model to a range of situations was investigated by computer simulations. Its practical value for further considerations and predictions in biological control is demonstrated.
