Description
Summary:In the freshwater crab, Barytelphusa guerini, the effectiveness of the antioxidant defense systems was evaluated in relation to the cadmium-induced lipid peroxidation process. The study protocol is described. Upon exposure to Cd, a significant increase in lipid peroxide formation was observed in both the liver and gill tissues. In addition, the rate of lipid peroxidation increased significantly in the hepatopancreas on all days of exposure to Cd. The activities of the antioxidant enzymes, superoxide dismutase and glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase, were enhanced on all days of Cd exposure, which indicated a responsiveness to the oxyradicals generated by Cd in the crab.
