Summary: | A report on daily energy expenditure, or field metabolic rate, of free-living Black-capped Chickadees (Parus atricapillus) during winter in Wisconsin, measured with doubly-labeled water, complements a study on the impact of wintertime supplemental feeding on the ecology of wild birds (Brittingham and Temple 1988, 1991). The data greatly extend the knowledge about the magnitude of energy expenditure during a time of year when expenditure is thought to be high and energy availability is thought to be limiting. |
