Description
Summary:Extremely contaminated sediments, close to point sources exhibiting exceptionally high levels of contaminants, known as hot spot sediments, were characterized. An approach to the quantitative assessment of the behaviour and fate of pollutants in such sediments was developed. This involved mapping and quantification of pollutants deposited, determination of release rates for contaminants, and a consideration of biological implications. Various remedial measures including dredging, incineration, capping and chemical immobilization were reviewed. Case histories concerning Norwegian sites are also included. There are 32 references.
