Description
Summary:When the current drag force acting on a marine cable is considerably larger than the cable's weight, the latter force may be neglected in the analysis. With this simplifying assumption, the marine cable has been referred to as a neutrally buoyant cable. Chue (1983) derived the analytical solution for a neutrally bouyant cable under a horizontal uniformly distributed load. However, unknown to Chue (1983), there are two possible equilibrium solutions for this kind of cable problem when the cable tension at the free surface is specified while the submerged cable length is unknown a priori. This note also furnishes the critical tension at the cable end whereby if the specified tension falls below this critical value, no equilibrium state exists.
